Generate and Grow Connection

Mental Health for Children and Youth

Generation Farms has been offering Mental Health services to children and youth for over 20 years. It is becoming a preferred modality in particular for young people, allowing support to be offered in a natural healthy environment that allows positive change to unfold naturally.

The sessions are conducted  outside in nature and with horses.  Being outside has been very helpful during Covid and is also wonderful for children and youth who do not feel comfortable in an office or talk oriented setting.
Our approach draws on the learnings that come from interactions with animals, nature and art to empower children and youth. It may be appropriate if your child is struggling with:
  • Anxiety
  • Social challenges
  • Self esteem issues
  • High sensitivity
  • Life transition
  • Losses

Sensitively designed experiences with horses and nature experiences will introduce the child to:

  • Healthy relationship
  • Respect
  • Leadership
  • Safety
  • Healthy boundaries
  • Focus
  • Follow through
We have two streams in our mental health programs for youth: COUNSELLING and CYC
COUNSELLING is available with Registered Clinical Counsellors who are trained and experienced in the Generation Farms approach to Equine Therapy. They are also skilled in Nature Based therapy.

Sasha Routley BA MA CYC, RCC;  & Kerry Moon BA CYC MA RCC  work in our counselling program and offer individual sessions to children, youth and young adults. Kerry and Sasha are experienced in supporting young people with a range of different challenges. They are skilled in our Equine Facilitated Wellness (EFW) approach that fosters healing connections with self, others and the environment. Both are Registered Clinical Counsellors; extended medical benefits may apply.

CYC SERVICES are available with an experienced degreed Child and Youth Worker who is a life-long horsewoman and trained in the Generation Farms approach to Equine Facilitated Wellness. The CYC program offers active sessions with horsemanship and the horse at the centre.

It is recommended that sessions be arranged in blocks of six or more.

Sessions run up to one hour, depending on the youth’s capacity. They are held outside on our 33 acre farm. Additionally we do have covered areas for varying weather conditions, as well as numerous indoor spaces (where we follow recommended COVID protocols).
The EFW approach at Generation Farms is effective in supporting children with a variety of challenges by integrating core principles that are evidence based and trauma sensitive.
