Coach bio

Emily Pelletier draws on a variety of experiences to provide services to people and horses from Nanaimo and beyond. Emily is an Equine Canada certified Level One Coach (now called Competition Coach 1). She also has a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology with a specialization in Equine Assisted Mental Health. Emily works in the field of Equine Facilitated Wellness at Generation Farms, both with individual clients and co-facilitating workshops and trainings with Deborah Marshall, MA RCC.
In 1999, Emily discovered natural horsemanship when looking for a way to solve behavior problems with a horse. This opened her eyes to a new way of looking at horses and she hasn't looked back. She incorporates theories of horsemanship directly into her teaching style and the overall management of the barn.
Emily enjoys teaching riders of all levels. She teaches dressage, jumping and horsemanship, adhering to classical principles. Emily has a particular interest in position work and teaching feel and timing. This work contributes to happy horses and riders with good communication. It is of extreme importance to learn to influence your horse without blocking their movement or response.
Emily believes that each person brings their own gifts and ways of being into their experience with horses. Rather than teaching you one specific way of being, Emily endeavors to help you find techniques that work for YOU. She believes that ego has no place in coaching, and seeks to step back from the “expert” role in order for students to feel able to explore. Emily passionately believes in being open to learning new methods as well as being open to what each horse has to teach us. Her greatest teachers will always be the horses.
I would like to recognize the influence that my thoroughbred Perry had on my life and understanding of horses at a subtle level. The communication shared between us was phenomenal and changed us both for the better. He left suddenly at the age of nine in 2008, despite our best efforts. One might argue that in his nine short years he lived more and loved more than many horses do with twice that time. He is sorely missed. Love you, P-Man.
Emily lives at Generation Farms with her husband Ira, son Cohen and dogs Zooey and Banjo.
