Leading the Herd: Creating authentic leadership
Women and Horsemanship

Women have long been drawn to horses. Doing horsemanship can be extremely humbling, as it brings out our "true selves" and quickly shows us both our strengths and weaknesses. Becoming proficient at horsemanship can be a journey of personal growth and increased self-awareness.

This six week group will include horsemanship exercises designed to:
  • increase awareness of body language
  • recognize emotion
  • focus energy
  • practice assertiveness
  • increase inner calm
Previous horse experience is NOT necessary!

This group will not include riding. Participants will be working with the horses from the ground.

Emily Pelletier is an Equine Canada Level One riding instructor and has a Bachelor's Degree in Child and Youth Care. She combines her experiences working with horses and people to create programs which enhance lives through the teachings of the horse.

Cost for Women and Horsemanship is $240 plus GST. The group includes 6 two-hour sessions. Registration is limited to 4 participants. Please call or email Emily for more information: (250)753-2067 or emily@generationfarms.ca.

Leading the Herd: Creating authentic leadership
Being in Right Relationship

Leading the Herd: Creating authentic leadership
Horses and Fear

The hopes and dreams of many aspiring horse people are thrown into turmoil when they discover that the beautiful hoofed creature they longed for frightens them too much for any enjoyment. Fear in the horse world is often seen as weak and people can push themselves into doing things that they are afraid of.  The old myth "don't let your horse know you are afraid or he will take advantage of you" still predominates.

Fear is part of our crucial warning system and is vital in order to be safe anywhere in our lives, especially around horses. As flight animals highly attuned to our inner state, they are confused and uncomfortable when we try to fake it.  Respectful and safe relationship with a horse comes about when the needs of both human and horse are understood and taken into account.

  • Rediscover the wisdom in fear; using it as information
  • Learn to distinguish between primordial fear which is a warning system, and vulnerability which is not about physical danger
  • Find out the difference between discomfort and danger
  • Understand the messages your body is giving you and how to work with it
  • Read the body language of the horse
  • Engage in safe and respectful relationship with a horse
  • Realize the role that ego plays in making dangerous decisions
  • Develop internal resources that strengthen your courage
This workshop is suitable for people who have their own horse as well as those who have tried activities with horses and have been afraid.  A carefully designed combination of theory, experiential exercises and hands on activities with horses will be included.  Each person will determine the amount of horse contact that is right for them.

There will be no riding in this workshop, but issues related to riding will be addressed.  Individual sessions can be booked with our school horses as a follow up to the workshop.

Facilitators:  Deborah Marshall MA, AAI and Emily Pelletier, BA, EQ Coach 1
